Hyper-Vest

A new generation of resistance training vests.

Top Fitness Product 2009: MEN’S HEATH MAGAZINE

Product Description:

The Hyper Vest creates the effect of mass evenly distributed over the body’s core to create resistance. By adding weight to the core, you can engage in any movement with the additional resistance of the weights. This is body weight training at its best. Use the vest for sports performance training, tactical training for fire, police, and military, general fitness, and overall health, weight loss, and prevention of osteoporosis. The Hyper Vest is elastic around your chest in the horizontal plane, which allows full chest expansion and contraction for breathing while the weights stay in place. A breathable, wicking fabric and generous open side panels make the vest exceptionally comfortable. The vest is so thin, you can wear it under a shirt and no one would know. The Hyper Vest comes with a system of .25lb weights that can be added or removed depending on the exercise or activity being performed.

The Hyper-Vest posed some very unique challenges from an industrial design standpoint, research highlighted a niche in the market in terms of usability and wear-ability as it related to comfort, and the ability to wear such a garment when performing one’s specific sport or activity.

Competitor analysis indicated most weighted fitness vests are extremely bulky and constructed from materials that are not breathable making them hot and uncomfortable and not appropriate for wearing whilst performing a sport. Addressing these issues naturally drove the design process into a deeper analysis of different fabric properties and to the design of the actual weights and their distribution over the body. It became clear that the vest needed to be thin, flexible and that the weights should not move during physical activity.

In parallel to this functional investigation, aesthetic considerations for the product were initiated.

Inspiration was garnered from wet suit designs and other sports apparel categories that allowed for full freedom of movement. Hydration packs and sport protection products were investigated for potential fastening systems, hardware and materials.

The fashion differences between male and female equipment was scrutinized to develop a product strategy that would be successful in appealing to both sexes.
